There are Sundays. And then there are Sundays involving a rooftop pool, a very good cocktail, a cabana and the distinct possibility that Monday may need to mind its own business.
Maybe Sammy is heading east this October for Maybe Sunday, a three-week run of rooftop parties at InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach.
Think less sticky-table Sunday session and more Slim Aarons accidentally discovered Coogee: cocktails by the pool, DJs from 2pm, cabanas, seafood, sunshine and enough linen to make you reassess your wardrobe.
Summer appears to have missed the memo
Because apparently it has arrived in Coogee in October.
Ocean air, a rooftop pool, cocktails and cabanas already make a convincing argument for staying east. Add the team behind some of Sydney’s most recognisable bars and the whole thing starts feeling considerably more dangerous — in the best possible way.
Each Sunday gets its own personality, drinks list and menu. Which is useful, because it provides an entirely reasonable explanation for attending more than once.
Three Sundays. One rooftop pool. A suspicious number of excellent reasons to lose the afternoon.
Pick your poison
11 Oct
Maybe Sammy
The opening Sunday comes with bubbles and the unmistakable Maybe Sammy treatment. Signature cocktails meet Queensland scallops with miso brown butter and buttermilk fried chicken.
18 Oct
Sanchez Social
Sunday two takes a tequila-shaped turn, with Primo Margaritas, cocktails and Mexican-inspired plates including tempura barramundi tacos, guacamole and tuna ceviche.
25 Oct
Say CHELL-OH!
The finale goes full citrus: Fancy Melon Sodas, Lemon Drop Martinis and Limoncello Margaritas alongside Sydney rock oysters, Moreton Bay bug rolls and fries.
Sunglasses: encouraged. Poolside glamour: expected. Pretending you’ve quietly escaped to the Mediterranean for four hours: entirely between you and your Instagram followers.
Thirty dollars gets you through the door
A $30 pre-booked ticket includes a cocktail on arrival, entertainment and guaranteed entry.
After that, the instructions are pleasingly simple: find somewhere sunny, order something cold, add something delicious and allow the Pacific to do the heavy lifting.
Coogee cleans up very nicely
Sydney has no shortage of places capable of serving a beautiful drink, but there is something especially satisfying about finding this much hotel glamour without leaving the neighbourhood.
Beach below. Rooftop pool above. Maybe Sammy on cocktail duty. The Pacific glowing away in the background like it has been briefed by the PR team.
Frankly, Coogee is showing off.
Come for one cocktail. Stay until Sunday starts behaving like Saturday.
Maybe Sunday hits that sweet spot between proper hotel glamour and a genuinely good afternoon out. Birthday, girls’ day, date with questionable intentions or simply an extremely convincing excuse not to cook dinner — it works.
Choose bubbles. Choose tequila. Choose limoncello.
Or choose chaos and book all three.
