ABBA fans, this is a big one.
Mamma Mia! The Party, the theatrical dining experience created by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus, is coming to Sydney for its Australian premiere in March 2027.
And this is definitely not a case of sitting quietly in a theatre seat for two hours.
Guests will step inside a Greek taverna, eat a four-course feast, watch a live story unfold around them, sing along to ABBA classics and then stay on as the entire venue transforms into a 1970s disco.
Sydney is getting its own Greek taverna
The experience will take over the Sydney Event Centre at The Star, with the venue transformed into Nikos’ family-run Greek taverna on the island of Skopelos.
If that name sounds familiar, there’s a reason. Skopelos was one of the filming locations for the 2008 Mamma Mia! movie.
Guests take their seats as a romantic story unfolds throughout the taverna, with the action happening around the tables rather than on a traditional stage.

A live band and cast of around 20 musicians and performers bring the story to life, with songs including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo woven through the night.
Dinner, ABBA, a Greek island setting and a disco afterwards? This feels less like a theatre ticket and more like someone has organised the ultimate girls’ night out for us.
Dinner is part of the show
Food sits right at the centre of the experience.
Guests are welcomed with a drink on arrival before settling in for a four-course Greek feast.

The meal begins with traditional sharing mezze, followed by generous platters featuring Greek flavours, slow-cooked meats and accompaniments.
Desserts, tea and coffee follow, with vegetarian and vegan options also available.
The idea is simple: you eat while the story continues around you, so there’s no awkward rush through dinner before the curtain goes up.
And then everyone hits the dance floor
Once the theatrical part of the evening wraps up, the party is far from over.

The taverna transforms into a glittering 1970s disco, with a DJ spinning ABBA classics and guests encouraged to stay, sing and dance.
So yes, there is a very real possibility that dinner ends with the entire room belting out Dancing Queen.
Frankly, we’d be disappointed if it didn’t.

This thing is already huge overseas
Mamma Mia! The Party first opened in Stockholm in 2016 and continues to run there today.
The London production followed in 2019 and has since welcomed more than 700,000 guests from around 110 countries.
Across Stockholm and London, the experience has now welcomed close to 1.5 million guests.
Sydney will become the next major international destination for the production.
Australia and ABBA go way back
The Sydney launch also comes with a fairly lovely full-circle moment.
TEG Dainty president and CEO Paul Dainty promoted ABBA’s first and only Australian tour back in 1977 and will now be involved in bringing Mamma Mia! The Party to Australia almost 50 years later.
And Australia’s enthusiasm for ABBA has clearly not faded much in the meantime.
As Björn Ulvaeus put it, Australia felt like a “natural next step” for the experience, with Sydney chosen for its live entertainment scene and international appeal.
