$3 oysters, seafood lunches and live music overlooking Coogee Beach. Rick Stein’s new outdoor terrace has arrived and you don’t need a reservation to pull up a chair.
There’s a particular kind of Sydney afternoon that starts with “just one drink” and quietly turns into lunch. The Terrace at Rick Stein at Coogee Beach looks well suited to the occasion.
Set above Arden Street at InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach, the new alfresco space brings 90 seats, long tables beneath umbrellas and a beach outlook to the local dining mix. It’s a more casual way to experience Rick Stein’s seafood offering, with a separate menu, its own drinks list and no minimum spend.
Start with oysters and see where lunch goes
The current weekend drawcard is $3 oysters on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For locals looking for a reason to get everyone together, that’s a pretty useful opening line.
The menu follows the restaurant’s seafood focus, with freshly shucked Sydney Rock oysters, prawns on ice with Marie Rose sauce, sashimi, tempura scallops and crumbed abalone among the options. Order a few plates between friends and give the afternoon some room.
Fish and chips with a beach outlook
If you’re settling in for something more substantial, there’s fish and chips with tartare, malt vinegar and curry sauce, calamari and chips, or the Coogee fish burger.
Seafood isn’t the only option. Burrata with heirloom tomatoes and a minute steak with Café de Paris butter also feature, giving the table a few different directions to take.
It’s an appealing proposition for a spontaneous local lunch: the beach in view, something good on the table and no booking time dictating the day.
Saturday afternoons come with live music
Saturday Sessions run from 2–5pm, bringing live music to the terrace and another reason to let lunch roll into the afternoon.
Weekend happy hour: 2–4pm.
Think $9 house wines,
$10 schooners of Hahn Super Dry and Stone & Wood,
plus selected highballs, house spritzes and sangria
for $15 or less.
Outside happy hour, the drinks list covers Champagne by the glass, white wine, rosé, chilled red and cocktails. A Coconut Margarita or Mandarin Gimlet might make the “just one drink” plan a little harder to stick to.
No reservation required
The Terrace operates on a walk-in-only basis, with no bookings and no minimum spend. Children are welcome, making it an option for a family lunch as well as an afternoon catch-up with friends.
Just keep an eye on the forecast. This is an outdoor space, and service is weather dependent — check the venue’s Instagram before heading over if the clouds are looking questionable.
